What is Bone China?

Bone China was first created in England back in the late 18th century when the potteries of Stoke-on-Trent were looking for something new and exciting to compete with the popular porcelain dinnerware being produced in China. It was during this time that a man named Josiah Spode discovered a recipe for bone China, which was found to be a lot stronger and more durable than porcelain. This new type of dinnerware was also less expensive to produce since it included a mixture of ground-up animal bones, kaolin, and feldspar.

Today, bone China is recognized for its luxurious translucence and whiteness. Unlike other types of dinnerware, it is made with an extreme amount of care and precision. The density of the bone in China's body is measured by taking a small sample of clay and then weighing it after firing it in a kiln. The weight is compared to a sample that is made with a standard recipe. If the weight is less than the standard recipe, the density of the bone in China's body is considered to be weak.

From its humble beginnings in England over 200 years ago, bone China has become one of the most sought-after types of dinnerware in the world. Its strength, translucence, and whiteness make it a perfect addition to any dining room table. With these notable producers like Wedgwood, Royal Doulton, Spode, and Lenox, bone China continues to be a cherished item that is crafted with utmost care and precision.
